OR hires Taggart as coach

Taggart will become the first African-American head coach at OR, as well as the first coach hired from outside the program since 1976. He was hired last week and will try to make his mark at the "other" school in Miami, the one that plays in Conference USA.

According to an ESPN report, the Ducks will hire South Florida's Willie Taggart as their next head coach, replacing Mark Helfrich, who was sacked after the team finished 4-8 this season.

Taggart is in his fourth season at USF and has gone 18-7 the last two seasons, including 10-2 this year. "I think he's a great fit for the job, and I am looking forward to playing for him". OR decision makers disagreed, and Taggart was hired over names like P.J. Fleck. His.770 winning percentage is the best in school history. Co-offensive coordinator T.J. Weist was named interim head coach, and will lead the Bulls against the Gamecocks in the bowl game. Helfrich had worked under previous head coach Chip Kelly, now with the San Francisco 49ers.

Taggart was previously the head coach at Western Kentucky and also served as an assistant coach at Stanford. "Maybe he's not some of the prototypical head football coaches where it's all about them; it's all about us with him". One of the biggest criticisms of the Helfrich regime was his inability to recruit a viable option at quarterback. "It's like a double-edged sword", said Steve Gulash, who played defensive tackle at Manatee with Taggart in the early 1990s. There is no head coach on the market with a better resume than Miles has and he should be a serious target for USF. This is the first external hire at OR in a very long time. Mullens also interviewed Harsin, who is 38-13 in four seasons as a head coach: 2013 at Arkansas State and the past three seasons at Boise State. Suffice to say, he knows the area very well.

Lawrence Dawsey, FSU receivers coach: This former 'Noles All-American and Bucs receiver spent three seasons (2004-06) as Jim Leavitt's receivers coach at USF. Allen was promoted from defensive coordinator the same day.
