White Nationalist Leader's Speech Sparks Protests At Texas University

Richard Spencer, the notorious white nationalist, was met by hundreds of student protesters Tuesday evening during his speaking engagement at Texas A&M University. Almost two hours into the event, state troopers wearing helmets pushed the crowd away from the student center building and locked the doors to prevent people from entering.

"At the end of the day, America belongs to white men", Spencer said.

Protestors were met by police in riot gear, and while the protest was nearly entirely peaceful, police did confirm that two non-students were arrested. And there is a historical connection between Davis and Texas A&M University. Many African-American students and students of other nationalities and backgrounds came to hear Spencer's message and, at times, they responded to him in midsentence and often challenged his unorthodox claims. Other protesters inside the auditorium where the speech took place tried to drown out Spencer's message, including one student who wore a clown costume and walked through the room carrying a sign that read, "He's the real bozo".

"I do not feel comfortable speaking with the press about this", William Spencer said. "Hail victory!" Spencer famously called out to a rally of supporters recently in the District of Columbia. "What's more, I think white individuals, and it appeared with Trump's decision, are anxious about their future".

While about 400 students attended Tuesday's event, hundreds more protested it.

Pretty much the only difference between the two is the members of Spencer's group don't actually call themselves "Neo-Nazis". He told the supporter that he was ecstatic with Trump's election to the presidency, but also said people need be willing to question Trump, make sure he's not just another Republican and that he fulfills his campaign promises.

The university is making it clear that they do not agree with the event and are officially objecting it.

Until Monday night Wiginton had only known Spencer through online circles. Trump has said repeatedly that he disavows support from the alt-right and white supremacists.

There has been a lot of attention on the school since word of Spencer's speech got out and Miendel said the mood on campus has been tense. He added that white people shaped the country socially, culturally and politically and they must do their best to protect their European identity. Even though they denounce his first of all it's continued views they say once the room was consolidation you'll see across booked they felt they had to the board. They do not want you to have identity and rootedness.

Instead, it was Preston Wiginton, a former student at the school who still resides in College Station, who invited Spencer to the campus and reserved the space for him to speak.

"I never expected anything like this", Wiginton said.
