The Black Diamond Ring: Total Solar Eclipse Stuns Asia

NASA Scientists were on the ground and used the opportunity to study the sun's atmosphere and solar storms- which affect planets.

On Tuesday, the moon passed in front of the sun, casting a shadow over remote sections of the Pacific Ocean: a total solar eclipse. We adjusted flight #870 from Anchorage to Honolulu just so our passengers could catch the solar eclipse from 35,000 feet.

Joe Rao, an associate astronomer at the American Museum of Natural History's Hayden Planetarium in NY, called Alaska Airlines last fall, explaining that the flight would be in the right place for the eclipse.

According to Hindu legends, a solar eclipse generates impurities in the environment that have an adverse effect on humans so into the Ganges for a purifying cleanse.

So, the scientists are testing out their observation methods in Indonesia, to make the most of that upcoming opportunity. This picture shows the moon passing in front of the sun during a partial solar eclipse in Manila on March 9, 2016.

The total eclipse will sweep across 12 out of 34 provinces in Indonesia, which stretches about 5,000 kilometers from east to west, before heading across the Pacific Ocean.

In Ternate, one of the last cities in the eclipse's path, some residents said they were viewing it by looking at the reflected image in bowls of water.

Indonesia has been promoting the eclipse in hopes of boosting tourism there, an industry that saw around 10 million visitors to the archipelago a year ago.

Budi Romadhoni told Anadolu Agency by phone that he witnessed 80 percent of the total eclipse in Semarang, the port city of Central Java.

NASA Scientists were on the ground and used the opportunity to study the sun's atmosphere and solar storms- which affect planets. North American skywatchers may feel left out by Tuesday's event and the upcoming African eclipse, but their time is coming.

There was also disappointment for a group of six eclipse chasers who traveled from Canada and the U.S.to Kalimantan.

Chou, a Canadian who helped develop the global standards for eclipse filters, said there were still impressive effects of light and darkness, and birds appeared confused and disoriented by dark falling again after dawn.

Crowds in Indonesia had the best look at a total solar eclipse on Wednesday. August 21st of next year a total solar eclipse will be visible across much of the united states. On land the durations were mostly between 1 and 3 minutes.

Indonesians and tourists alike celebrated the country's first total solar eclipse in more than three decades on Wednesday, although the view was spoiled by cloudy conditions for some skywatchers.

Another passenger on the aircraft reportedly saw an anomaly in the woman's bag, and informed flight attendants of their concern. The carrier also added it "will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation being conducted by the competent authorities".
