Deadly flu strain on the rise in Manitoba

Public Health England (PHE) issued a warning after an increase cases of of the H1N1 swine flu bug.

The Ohio Department of Health on Wednesday announced 203 new flu-related hospitalizations from February 21 to February 27. The total number of deaths since July previous year stood at 121, the Centers for Diseases Control (CDC) said yesterday, adding that the number of flu-related deaths might reach between 230 and 290 by the end of the month. Part of the reason for that number was because of a vaccine that was not effective against some strains of the flu.

The common symptoms of influenza include higher fever, more malaise and severe body aches and the viruses are categorized in three types: A, B, and C. While A and B-type influenza are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illness that occur nearly every winter, C category usually causes either a very mild respiratory illness or no symptoms at all.

For most people influenza infection is just a nasty experience, but for some it can lead to illnesses that are more serious, including bronchitis and secondary bacterial pneumonia, which can be life threatening.

Health officials say the flu has gotten off to a slow start since last October. That includes washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth when you cough or cough into the crook of your elbow, and isolating yourself from others when you have symptoms.

The current wave of influenza activity is expected to last several weeks and health care providers can continue to offer flu vaccine to all Manitobans at no charge.

There have been no reported flu-related deaths locally this season, said Lucas County Health Department officials.
