White House hosts Canada's new young PM with the famous name

WASHINGTON-President Barack Obama hosts Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the White House on Thursday for a state visit that is set to focus on expanding economic cooperation between the two countries and issues that are priorities for both leaders, such as climate change.

Hundreds of people gathered Thursday on the lawn of the White House in anticipation of Justin Trudeau's arrival, making for a scene unlike any that has greeted a Canadian prime minister in recent political memory.

Besides trade, the two leaders were expected to seek common ground on environment protection.

The Canadian Prime Minister will come to Washington, D.C. this week.

Two industry sources and one national government confirmed that the issue will develop during the prime minister's visit that begins Wednesday, after a year of uncertainty swirling around it.

Trudeau's visit marks the 11th state or official visit of Barack Obama's presidency but the first for a Canadian in 19 years.

Trudeau's father swept into power in 1968 on a wave of support dubbed "Trudeaumania" and, with a short interruption, served until 1984. He was often compared to President John F. Kennedy and remains one of the few Canadian politicians known in America.

The previous government and the Obama administration had reached an agreement-in-principle on the idea a year ago but it has lingered amid uncertainty over whether the governments would introduce bills required to implement it. Amid the tensions, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Bruce Heyman could not get a meeting with Harper or his Cabinet ministers for months.
