USA strike kills at least 150 Shebab fighters in Somalia

Mar 09, 2016, 16:59

The United States has carried out the deadliest recorded strike in the history of its drone campaign, killing about 150 al-Shabaab fighters during a single raid in Somalia.

Defense officials said Monday airstrikes from fighter jets and drones killed about 150 "graduates" at an al-Shabab terrorist training camp in Rasa, Somalia.

Separately, a US official told CNN that the Al-Shabaab fighters were standing outside in military formation when the strike occurred.

The camp had been under surveillance for some time, Capt Davis said.

The Pentagon said Monday it did not expect any civilian casualties to result from the strikes.

The bomb detonated at a checkpoint about 325km north of the capital Mogadishu, where last month al-Shabab fighters claimed responsibility for a blast that tore a gaping hole in a passenger plane shortly after takeoff.

"The attack will severely minimize the threat of Shabaab". Al-Shabab was pushed out of Mogadishu by African Union peacekeeping forces in 2011 but has continued to launch frequent attacks in its bid to overthrow the Western-backed government-including the twin bombing at a busy restaurant in the Somali city of Baidoa that killed 30 on February 28.

Some experts say that Al Shabab, an Al Qaeda affiliate, is in a competition with the Islamic State to show that it has not been eclipsed. Last month dozens of Kenyan troops were killed when al-Shabab attacked an African Union base in southwest Somalia.

"There are several dozen US advisers in Somalia, working with government and regional troops".

"Their removal will degrade al-Shebab's ability to meet the group's objectives in Somalia, which includes recruiting new members, establishing bases and planning attacks on USA and AMISON (African Union Mission to Somalia) forces there", he said.

"There will obviously be some limitations on where we can be transparent, given a variety of sensitivities - including diplomatic", said White House spokesman Josh Earnest.

He added that no US forces on the ground participated in the strike, the largest in recent memory against the militant group, in terms of the number of fighters believed killed.
