Al-Shabab, means "the youth" in Arabic.

The US strike appeared to have led to heavy casualties, with al-Shabab reinforcements arriving to collect the dead, the resident added.

Al Shabaab were driven out of Mogadishu in 2011 by AMISOM troops but have been carrying out guerrilla and suicide attacks against the internationally recognised Somali government.

There have been previous attacks on a peacekeeping force known as the African Union Mission in Somalia, or Amisom.

The US military has claimed its most successful operation against jihadists after killing at least 150 al-Shabaab terrorists at a training camp in Somalia.

"This was a group that was completing training to do a large-scale attack, and it would follow that when they concluded training, they would engage in a large-scale attack", Capt. Davis said at the Pentagon on Monday.

According to the defense official, U.S. intelligence assets had been watching the camp in Somalia for several weeks prior to the strike.

The US has for years carried out missile and drone strikes against al-Shabaab, killing former leader Godane in 2014.

Hundreds of people including government officials and foreigners have so far been killed in apparently coordinated bombings claimed by what has been a beleaguered group.

In a separate development Monday, the White House announced that it will disclose how many people have been killed by American drones and other counterterrorism strikes since 2009, when President Obama took office, the AP reported.

"That al-Shabaab had that many recruits in training at just one location.is a worrying indicator of the group's continued relevance and its power to attract", Pham said.

USA drones are based at Camp Lemonier in neighbouring Djibouti, from where they have been dispatched to kill individual al-Shabaab commanders.

Somalia's Foreign Minister Abdusalam Omer said the Somali intelligence agency had provided information about the camp to the U.S.in the runup to the attack.

"Their removal will degrade al-Shebab's ability to meet the group's objectives in Somalia, which includes recruiting new members, establishing bases and planning attacks on USA and AMISON (African Union Mission to Somalia) forces there", he said.
