Sanders shocks in MI primary; Clinton takes Mississippi

Ohio Gov. John Kasich also posted a strong showing and is in a close race for second with Texas Sen.

The Republican race in MS was a two-man contest between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, too close to call as polls closed. Like Kasich, Rubio must win his home state in order to remain a viable contender. Michigan, with big college towns and a sizable population of working-class voters, was a good fit for him, though something of a surprise victory given that Clinton had led in polls heading into Tuesday's voting. He emerged from MI and MS with no new delegates, a grim outcome for a candidate who has the overwhelming support from Republican senators, governors and other elected officials.

Just as cable news pundits began preparing their obituaries for the Bernie Sanders campaign, the democratic socialist from Vermont pulled off a stunning victory in MI.

A forth Republican primary took place in Hawaii also on Tuesday.

For Republicans, though, Trump is ahead, his lead is less dominant because it's a four-person race - and the candidates keep splitting the vote.

Trump was strong among a broad swath of demographic groups, but Cruz showed particular strength among voters who were very conservative, want a candidate who shares their values, and want an experienced candidate.

Tuesday night's result in MI was shocking, in that Sanders narrowly won when the polls said he would lose by almost 20 points. But the candidates will be speaking to a much wider audience of voters in the delegate-rich states of Missouri, Illinois, Ohio and North Carolina, which also host Democratic contests that day.

Trump's Tuesday night news conference in Jupiter, Florida served as a rebuttal to Mitt Romney, who earlier in the week called Trump a "fraud" and a failed businessman - on display at the presser were Trump Steaks, Trump Ice bottled water, bottles from Trump Winery and a copy of Trump Magazine.

If Mr Kasich and Mr Rubio can not win their home states next week they are expected to bow out.

Since it's a winner-take-all state, Florida is a GOP delegate goldmine.

The primaries for both parties will continue until July.

In Michigan, Trump received 37.2 per cent of the Republican votes.

There is one more question for Clinton: Even if she shouldn't worry that she will fall behind Sanders for the nomination, should she worry that a Republican opponent will successfully use the same attacks Sanders has in a general election? Recent polls had shown Sanders behind Clinton by double digits.

For Republicans, 150 delegates were at stake in the party's four contests, while for Democrats, 188 were up for grabs in the party's two contests.

Trump, reveling in his victories at one of his Florida resorts, spoke like a general election candidate, emphasizing the importance of helping Republican senators and House members get elected in the fall. She already entered the night with a 196-delegate lead over Sanders based on primaries and caucuses alone.

In Mississippi, Clinton won the state by 83 percent, which increased the number of her victories to 12 states in total.

In the overall race for delegates, Trump has 458 and Cruz has 359.

To win nationally, you have to win your most demographically favorable states by a lot, in order to offset losses in your weak regions.

At publication time, she had 760 pledged delegates, a 214-delegate lead over Sanders' 546.

Republican state Rep. Bob McDermott said he's supporting Cruz, in part because "in the debates, he has behaved himself and acted like a statesman". Kasich's MI performance signals a similar positive outcome in OH, it does little to resolve the GOP's muddle.
