Scott Kelly is Home in Houston After His #YearinSpace

A Soyuz capsule carrying NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov landed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday (March 2). His family, including his twin brother Mark greeted him on the tarmac in Houston around 1 a.m.

Kelly, 52, was also part of an experiment comparing his development and changes in space with those of his identical twin brother Mark back on Earth, who is a former astronaut.

"Those of us who dream of sending astronauts to deep space thank Scott Kelly for his sacrifice", said Jim Green, director of planetary science for NASA, "and are thrilled to welcome him home".

At the end of this mission, Scott Kelly has spent a total of 520 days in space, which is the most among USA astronauts. NASA is hoping to use some of that information for future missions to Mars. It is the lab Kelly used during his space trip.

Clearly animated and looking well, he said he didn't feel much different than he did after his five-month station mission five years ago.

By becoming the first NASA astronaut to spend a year in space, Bolden said Kelly has helped their efforts make a giant leap toward sending people to the Red Planet. Researches can now study the differences between the genetic doubles when one has been in space for a long period of time and the other has remained on earth.

The ISS trio leave behind Kopra, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and the European Space Agency's British astronaut Tim Peake.

Houston will be home for Scott Kelly for awhile, as he will be undergoing weeks and months of physical, biological and mental tests, according to NASA.

Kelly will discuss his space mission as well as address questions from members of the press on Friday afternoon.

He's back on earth but his mission is not over.
