US, Russian astronauts return to earth after almost one year in space

Mar 06, 2016, 11:20

They checked out of the International Space Station 3½ hours earlier.

Kelly began his mission to the space station on March 27, 2015, riding a Russian rocket that launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Kelly and Kornienko have spent 340 consecutive days in space.

The world record of 438 days in space was set by a Russian doctor in the 1990's.

Astronaut Scott Kelly is on his way back to Earth to end an unprecedented yearlong mission in space for NASA.

I thought we were tentative against whatever defense they had. "It's something you have to learn and bounce back from". South Carolina: Plays either No. 13 Kentucky or No. 25 Florida in the SEC tournament semifinals Saturday.

For over the past 11 months Kelly and Korneiko have travelled 144 million miles in space, orbiting the globe 5,440 times and encountering about 10,888 sunrises and sunsets made them write their names in golden words in space history.

This information is important because NASA eventually wants to send humans to Mars, a round trip mission that could take more than a year.

Ground personnel carry Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov shortly after landing near the town of Dzhezkazgan (Zhezkazgan), Kazakhstan, March 2, 2016. Kelly's one-year stay in space was the fourth time he has gone to space.

"Kelly's identical twin brother, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, participated in parallel twin studies on Earth to help scientists compare the effects of space on the body and mind down to the cellular level", NASA said in a statement.

Kelly now has the distinction of being the American astronaut who has spent the most number of days in space-520 days. "I could go another year if I had to".

All three companies are accused of professional negligence for not insisting on corrosion control treatment for the city's water. Federal environmental protection officials are considering trying to strengthen the rule sometime later this year or in 2017.

"I think it is a little bit of a different experience being on this space station versus Mir", said Kelly when asked about Polyakov's experience. During the field tests, NASA and Russia's Roscosmos will have the astronauts perform activities, like climbing ladders and standing from a sitting position, to see if these countermeasures worked.

He will travel by chartered flight to Houston for a Nasa medical examination. However aside from minor issues, Kelly explained his concern about the possible effects of space radiation on his body. He posed while making coffee, getting a flu shot, and took selfies. "If we can dream it, we can make it so", he said.

We'll be keeping a close eye on the astronauts' descent, updating if there are any hiccups or delays. He'll have plenty of pictures, at least, for the scrapbook - he posted 1,000 dramatic, color-drenched pictures of Earth on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Kelly passed on command of the ISS to NASA astronaut Tim Kopra after living on the space station for 340 days, the longest an American has spent in space.
