Cruz racks up 2 wins, Trump snags Louisiana in GOP race

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz took a strong lead over NY businessman Donald Trump in returns from the Kansas Republican presidential caucuses on Saturday as Democrats began their caucuses across the state.

Bernie Sanders scored two wins in Kansas and Nebraska caucuses on Super Saturday, while Hillary Clinton secured a victory in Louisiana.

Supporters of Vermont Sen. Marco Rubio had another disappointing night, raising serious questions about his viability in the race.

At his news conference in Florida, where Rubio is under intense pressure to win later this month, Trump also congratulated Cruz for his victories.

"I would like to take on Ted one-on-one", he said, ticking off a list of big states where he said Cruz had no chance. "That would be so much fun". It was Cruz' fifth win of the nominating race.

"What we're seeing is the public coming together, libertarians coming together, men and women who love the Constitution coming together and uniting and standing as one behind this campaign", Cruz said in Idaho.

The GOP slate Saturday, with 155 delegates up for grabs, also includes a caucus in Kentucky and a primary in Louisiana, in which Trump is expected to do well. But Clinton led in nearly every reliable recent poll of states voting on March 8 and March 15, when another substantial chunk of delegates will be awarded.

Saturday's races are wedged between far more consequential contests: the dozen states that voted on "Super Tuesday" March 1 and the big battles on March 15, when many Republican races, including in Rubio's Florida and Kasich's OH, become winner-take-all affairs. Florida Senator Marco Rubio and Ohio Governor John Kasich trailed. "As long as the field remains divided, it gives Donald an advantage".

Clinton said she was "thrilled" to add to her pledged delegate count.

"No matter who wins this Democratic nomination", she said, "I have not the slightest doubt that on our worst day we will be infinitely better than the Republicans on their best day".

Tara Evans, a 52-year-old quilt maker from Bellevue, Nebraska, said she was caucusing for Clinton, and happy to know that the former first lady could bring her husband back to the White House.

"Louisiana is identical to the states she has been performing well in and likewise Bernie Sanders has done poorly in", said Joshua Stockley, associate professor of political science at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton won 71 percent of the Democratic vote compared to Bernie Sanders' 23 percent. Rubio had 110 and John Kasich, 25.
