NASA's Scott Kelly Returns Home After 340 Days In Space

Mar 06, 2016, 22:29

After spending 340 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko returned to Earth on Tuesday.

After boarding their Russian Soyuz capsule, Kelly and Kornienko along with the third member of their crew Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov safely landed in Kazakhstan at 11:26 p.m. EST (10:26 a.m. March 2 Kazakhstan time).

After he touches down in Kazakhstan in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Scott Kelly will be flown to Houston where Nasa researchers will begin their battery of scientific checks.

Kelly has completed a almost yearlong mission on the International Space Station, the longest any US astronaut has been in space.

During their nearly year-long stay on the ISS, Kelly and Kornienko took part in several medical studies and experiments created to find out more information on the impacts of high radiation and weightlessness in space on human health.

Mr Kelly, 52, was also part of an experiment comparing his development and changes in space with his identical twin brother - Mark - back on Earth.

The astronauts were launched to the space station on March 27 last year for their one year mission.

Currently, Expedition 47 is still operating the station with NASA astronaut Tim Kopra in command. The mission was created to see how the human body can cope with long periods in space, in preparation for possible missions to Mars.

Astronaut Scott Kelly performed death-defying spacewalks, grown and eating successfully grown lettuce in the outer space and chatted with people from school kids to President Obama.

The pair were subjected to a battery of tests before and after their ascent towards the ISS and underwent more tests soon after landing.

In other news WashingtonPost News reported, "The air feels great out here", NASA spokesman at the scene, Rob Navias, quoted Kelly as saying. NASA and Roscosmos are looking at Fluid Shifts with an eye on future space station crews.

Kelly was lifted from the capsule and placed in a seat to allow his body to readjust to the earth's gravity.

"We wanted to say goodbye and thank you", Volkov radioed flight controllers before undocking. This information is important because NASA eventually wants to send humans to Mars, a round trip mission that could take more than a year.

More than anything else, his constant tweets from space have made the day for many earthlings, including those in India.
