Spacemen Back Home After Year Aloft: 'We did it!'

A Soyuz capsule carrying NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko and Sergey Volkov landed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday, NASA television reported.

Astronaut Scott Kelly, shown in a December spacewalk outside the International Space Station, will arrive in Houston late Wednesday night, where he'll be reunited with his two daughters and his girlfriend.

Now, the "Human Research Programme" is building on that foundation by proposing more worldwide collaboration on future one-year space station missions.

Astronaut Scott Kelly is streaking back to Earth to end an unprecedented yearlong mission in space for NASA. But there are opportunities to solve the Earth's environmental problems, Kelly said Thursday.

Kelly and Kornienko have spent 340 consecutive days in space.

Hollywood is sorority racist". "This is the wildest, craziest Oscars to ever host, because we've got all this controversy". Leonardo DiCaprio won best actor at Sunday's 88th Academy Awards for his performance in "Revenant", his first Oscar win.

The Soyuz has undocked from the International Space Station and will begin the journey back to Earth.

In addition to collecting his own blood and saliva samples during his year in space, Kelly conducted a number of experiments - like growing lettuce and flowers in zero-gravity. His identical twin, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, offered himself up as a medical guinea pig so researchers could study the differences between the genetic doubles, one in space and the other on the ground.

Studying the Kelly brothers' DNA may provide some hints about how spaceflight changes human genetics, says John Charles, the chief scientist of NASA's human research program. NASA has been collecting data on Scott and comparing it to his brother's information in order to determine the various impacts extended time spent in space can have on the body. The worldwide record is almost 438 days, set by Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov on the Mir space station in 1994 and 1995.

About 100 homes were dismantled on Monday, with demolition teams expected to return the next morning, our correspondent says. She said: "Most of the areas they are dismantling are now empty because people have moved to other parts of the camp".

"We go through about an hour of field tests of various kinds - one is even like an obstacle course, where you run around, stand up from a sitting position and jump", Cmdr Kelly said.

Over four flights, Kelly's total time in space now stands at 520 days, making him the most experienced USA astronaut and moving him up to 17th in the world.

"We just want to know what it takes to keep people healthy in space for that long", said Vitaterna, who is also the executive director of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Biology at NU.

Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko traveled to the ISS for the record-breaking, year-long mission in hopes to discover more about the long-term effects of space and space travel on the human mind and body.
