Russia's anti-Putin activists mark Nemtsov murder, amid threats and attacks

Yeltsin saw in the brilliant, handsome and unfailingly ebullient Nemtsov a potential successor, but after Mr Putin came to power in 2000, the politician was sidelined and joined the opposition.

Nemtsov's death will be commemorated in a number of foreign cities, including Washington, Warsaw, New York, Berlin, Cologne, Prague, London, Rome and many others, according to a list published on the Facebook page of the event.

Nemtsov's daughter Zhanna was due to launch a foundation in her father's name in London later on Saturday along with ex-tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, an opposition leader who spent a decade in prison. But many went there after the march to lay flowers at an improvised memorial that the authorities have repeatedly tried to destroy. Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister and vocal critic of President Vladimir Putin, was shot dead on a bridge overlooking the Kremlin on February 27, 2015.

"Today, as well as a year ago, on February 28, we, ambassadors of the EU countries and the EU and Norway, some of us with spouses, came to pay tribute to Boris Nemtsov, because he was an outstanding, famous politician who contributed to our common cause - relations between the European Union and Russian Federation".

Opposition-minded Russians accuse the Kremlin of waging a campaign to erase Nemtsov's memory.

On the eve of the anniversary, one of the few independent lawmakers in the Russian parliament's lower house, the Duma, proposes that deputies observe a moment of silence in Nemtsov's memory but the majority refused.

But Nemtsov's family and allies insist the authorities have failed to bring the masterminds to justice and point the finger of blame at Chechnya's Moscow-backed strongman Ramzan Kadyrov - and the Kremlin itself.
