Sony IMX318 22.5-Megapixel Camera Sensor Launched for Smartphones

Sony's smartphone camera sensor technology can be found in nearly every smartphone on the market, including ones from heavy hitters like Apple, Huawei and even Samsung.

Some of the new Exmor RS sensor's characteristics worthy of reaching the headlines include a built-in high-speed hybrid autofocus (AF) module which, as of February 16, is an industry first.

The IMX318 is a type 1/2.6 stacked CMOS image sensor with 22.5 effective megapixels, and it boasts a more compact size, greater image quality, and higher performance.

The Sony IMX318 sensor will start shipping out to camera companies in May 2016. That being said, Sony has a new sensor that they have announced. This image sensor is more compact and promises better image quality than its predecessors. Sony is also boasting 0.03 seconds to autofocus for stills, and 0.017 for video. This is because less light will enter per pixel as the megapixel count increases, and with the sensor already smaller than its predecessors, we suspect that it will perform terribly in low light environments. With this, the image sensor achieves a compact, type 1/2.6 size suitable for inclusion into smartphones, while still realizing a high resolution of 22.5 effective megapixels, among the top in the industry. It's also worth noting that despite the smaller pixel size compared to the IMX230, Sony claims that the IMX318 does not suffer in terms of image quality thanks to new manufacturing technologies that improve light utilization efficiency and eliminates noise. In addition to minuscule dimensions and power draw, the sensor can handle full 4K recording at 30 frames per second, 1080p at 120FPS, and 720p at 240FPS, enabling impressive slow-motion video. But with the IMX318, Sony has created the industry's first*1 stacked CMOS image sensor with hybrid AF built into the sensor's internal signal processor.
