1 of 2 NYPD officers shot in the Bronx leaves hospital

Espeut was one of the two NYPD officers shot Thursday night while doing a "vertical patrol" of the Melrose Houses in the Bronx.

The shooting took place in the Melrose Houses at 345 E. 153rd St., where the officers were on patrol "when they encountered armed suspects & were shot", according to the NYPD Twitter account.

Mayor de Blasio arrived at Lincoln Hospital shortly after the shooting, having just delivered his State of the City address at nearby Lehman College.

One person was shot and killed at the scene but it was unclear if the victim was involved in the shootings of the officers, an NYPD source said.

Responding officers found the suspect dead in an apartment where a.32-caliber pistol and a shotgun were recovered.
