Fight night: Personal attacks, court debate for GOP hopefuls

Marco Rubio, R-Fla., right, hands Republican presidential candidate, businessman Donald Trump a tic tac container at a break during the CBS News Republican presidential debate at the Pe...

The New York billionaire went into the CBS debate with a head of steam, having won New Hampshire last Tuesday and holding a big lead in polls in SC a week before Republicans vote February 20. Yet the Republican race remains deeply uncertain, with party elites still hoping that one of the more mainstream candidates will rise up to challenge Trump and Cruz.

The Republican presidential debaters misfired in assertions about Supreme Court nominees, Syria, immigration and more. But it was Trump, with his asides and insults, that often dominated the dialogue.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida joined the fray, accusing Cruz of lying. "He is so weak on illegal immigration it's laughable, and everybody knows it".

Trump's combative style has set the tone for much of the campaign but in recent days he had pledged to pursue a more measured, positive approach.

The candidates first took to the stage and observed a moment of silence for the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Trump was jeered lustily by the audience in Greenville, South Carolina, a state where the Bush family is popular with Republicans. Lindsey Graham, the SC senator who ended his own bid for president in December, will campaign for Bush across the state. "He's a nasty guy", Trump said. Trump was quick to interrupt again and made public some little known fact about Bush. "We all make mistakes". "They said there were weapons of mass destruction and they knew there were none". "And there were none".

Bush, who has wilted in the past under assault from Trump, stood firm this time. The former Florida governor is looking to capitalize on George W. Bush's popularity in the state by bringing the former president out to campaign with him for the first time Monday.

Trump calls for Iowa election do-over
The survey includes preliminary results from interviews with 1,660 Democratic caucus-goers and 1,794 Republican caucus-goers. A lot of them are saying that the "real winner" of the Iowa caucuses is Senator Marco Rubio, even though he came in third.

Jeb Bush recoiled. "I'm sick and exhausted of Barack Obama blaming my brother for all the problems that he's had", Bush said, . "My dad is the greatest man alive in my mind". He then quickly turned the fire on Trump, saying, "While Donald Trump was building a reality TV show, my brother was building a security apparatus" to keep the country safe. And I'm proud of what he did. Trump dodged the impeachment question and instead reiterated how disastrous the Iraq War was, and how poorly Jeb Bush addressed it near the beginning of his campaign past year.

"My mom is the strongest woman I know" - Bush.

"That's another lie", Trump said.

The rivalry between Trump and Cruz has intensified as they prepare to fight for the anti-establishment mantle in SC. Trump called himself a "common-sense conservative", which Cruz dismissed. Ted Cruz of Texas, both of whom hit back with gusto. One week ahead of the South Carolina Republican primary, the candidates clashed over their records, immigration, foreign policy and the legacy of former President George W. Bush.

Storm Imogen batters south England, Wales
Although named storm systems are named purely because of the winds they bring, Storm Imogen still provided her own waterworks too. The Port of Dover was closed for two hours overnight, with the authority tweeting on Monday that it was monitoring the situation.

"These attacks, some of them are personal".

"He kept us safe and I'm forever grateful", the Florida senator said, adding that the terrorist attacks of 2001 happened because Bill Clinton failed to kill Osama bin Laden when he had the chance.

Rubio, Cruz argued, supported citizenship for all undocumented immigrants, which is not so.

"I don't know how he knows what I said on Univision because he doesn't speak Spanish", Rubio said.

Pep hits out at media; says he is 'like a woman'
It has always been an open secret that Manchester City had their eyes on Guardiola to fire their own bid for European honours. He said he would talk about the City deal once he was in England. "I know it's a risk, but it's exactly what I love".

"This is a disturbing pattern now, because for a number of weeks now, Ted Cruz has just been telling lies".
