Running back Brandon Jacobs was one of the key players in the Giants surprising Super Bowl run last season, but he may not be back with the team next fall, unless he’s willing to take much less in salary going forward.

According to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, Jacobs’ representatives and the Giants front office met with each other during the combine, but were unable to gain any traction in discussions centered around bring Jacobs back to New York for another season. The main sticking point as of right now is the Giants insistence on Jacobs accepting a significant pay cut and while he’s gone on record this off-season as being okay with a reduction, Jacobs isn’t likely to take it unless New York adds more security to his deal in the form of guaranteed money.

Jacobs is slated to earn $4.4 million this season under his contract, but it’s highly unlikely the Giants will let him play out the season at that number, given that they’re projected to be over the salary cap threshold of $120 million and will need to find ways to save money very soon.

Jacobs finished last season with 152 carries for 571 yards and seven touchdowns.
