Braylon Edwards today signed a one year $3.5 million dollar contract with the San Fransisco 49ers. It’s a base line contract for a wide reciever who only a few short years ago had 16 touchdown receptions. In fact, he is even making less than Mike Sims-Walker is with the St. Louis Rams. So what does this mean for him on your draft day?
Edwards is not the same guy he was four years ago when he was the fourth best fantasy wide out. He has gotten a case of the dropsies, getting into fork and knife fights at restaurants and getting DWIs. One advantage he has is he is no longer strapped down on the conservative Jets run first offense. However, he still has Alex Smith to flutter balls over his head.
He does have upside, however. If the hate goes too far for him he could be a real bargin on your draft night. It is what is though to be a good offense for him. Jim Harbaugh loves quarterbacks. He was one for crying out loud. One would think that he would like to throw a little bit. Also, in Edwards favor is Michael Crabtree is going to once again miss most of the pre-season. This will allow Edawrds to be the main threat in the mean time.
I think Edwards has a chance to be relevant again. Do I think he will be the star he once was? No. Do I think he has a chance to be? Sure. Let’s face it. Edwards had to have his ego get hurt a little when he saw he has such little interest in him. If he has that chip on his shoulder that we all say athletes that have something to prove has he may be a little bit of a surprise.
Bottom Line: Draft him for depth to your receiving corp. I would not draft him as a starter but he just may get to that point. Especially if Crabtree continues to stink.
