It’s not often that head coaches in the NFL are fired mid way through a season, but Brad Childress came close to earning that fate, with his surprising decision to dump Randy Moss just four games after acquiring him from the Patriots for a 3rd round pick.
According to ESPN’s Ed Werder, Vikings owner Zygi Wylf seriously considered removing Childress from his position for leaving the rest of the organization out of the loop on the decision to waive Moss.
Wylf is well known for running the Vikings and his other business holdings as a team, preferring to have all decisions agreed on before announcing them to the public. Having Childress circumvent that rule so brazenly incensed Wylf and while Childress’ job was never really in jeopardy, there’s little doubt that his hold on the position is tenuous at best right now.
Waiving Moss after spending a valuable third round pick to get him a month ago has been widely criticized around the league, even as news broke of Moss’ tirade during a catered meal for the team last week and his strange press conference in which Moss proclaimed his love for the Patriots organization multiple times.
His departure certainly leaves a major hole in Minnesota’s offense, at least until Pro Bowl wide receiver Sidney Rice is able to get back on the field at full strength. In the interim, expect defenses to double team Percy Harvin, leaving Brett Favre with few options in the pass game aside from tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and lackluster receiver Bernard Berrian.
