Having a quarterback controversy mid-season isn’t new, but the way in which it’s happened this season in Philadelphia is definitely unexpected, as the Eagles have two quarterbacks that have been tremendously productive at different points in the year.
The current quarterback du jour is Kevin Kolb, who has led his team to solid wins in back to back weeks, and put up outstanding numbers against the Falcons earlier today. Kolb had been labeled the starter going into the season by head coach Andy Reid, but after leaving the field on opening day with a concussion, Kolb was replaced as the starter by Michael Vick, who played extremely well in his starts as well but has been out for the past two weeks after suffering a rib injury in week four.
That has led to much discussion as to who should be the starter when Vick returns, and while it remains to be seen just who Reid will anoint in this go around, several sources – including ESPN’s Chris Mortensen – believe that the Eagles will stick with Kolb going forward, throwing aside their earlier decision to have Vick be the starter for the remainder of the season.
Having two good options to choose from isn’t exactly a bad spot to be in, and there’s plenty of teams around the league that would undoubtedly love to trade positions with the Eagles in that regard. But it certainly can’t help the psyche of either quarterback to know that one bad performance could be all it takes to send them off the field and to the bench.
Both Kolb and Vick have handled the chaos at their position in stride, showing respect for each other in their comments, but there’s no doubt that both quarterbacks would prefer to take hold of the starting role and run with it all season long, eliminating the flip-flopping that the Eagles have had to resort to thus far.
Kolb will get the first shot to do just that next week and if he can be productive once again, it will be difficult at best for Philadelphia to make a decision to go back to Vick for the rest of the year.
