Childress close to starting Jackson over Favre

With an NFL record 293 consecutive games played in and 291 consecutive games started under his belt, dating back to 1992, Brett Favre has shown himself to be the NFL’s version of the “Iron Horse”, but after missing practice once again yesterday, that streak is close to coming to an end.

Citing a league source, Judd Zulgad and Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune are reporting that Vikings head coach Brad Childress is gravitating towards having Favre take a seat on the bench this Sunday against New England, in favor of backup quarterback Tavaris Jackson.

Jackson has taken all of the reps with the first team offense this week in Favre’s absence, and given his previous stint as the starter prior to Favre’s arrival last season, he should be comfortable in that role if Childress follows through with his current intuition. That said, Jackson hasn’t been on the field for a significant amount of time since 2008, and it could take some time for him to get into a rhythm as a result, something the Vikings can ill afford right now with their 2-4 record.

In the end, today’s practice will be key to understanding which direction Childress will go, as Favre would go into Sunday’s game without taking a single snap leading up to it. Continuing the streak is obviously important, but in the end, the only thing that should matter to Childress is to put his team in a position to win, and an injured Favre does not lend itself to that easily.

As always, we’ll keep you posted.
