Phillips gains vote of confidence in Dallas

It’s not often that head coaches who start a season off with an 0-2 record are given a seal of approval from the team’s owner and front office, but fortunately for Dallas head coach Wade Phillips, that’s exactly how things have played out for him thus far.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn’t known for being overly patient with his coaches, especially when the team fails to live up to expectations the way that Dallas has in the early going this season, but for the time being, Jones seems content to keep Phillips in his role.

“I do believe in Wade and the staff and the players,” said Jones, who has never fired a coach in midseason. “The thing about it is when you have that kind of commitment, one of the No. 1 things you have it for is those situations. Those people are supposed to really be there in hard times. Hard times. That’s when you’ve got to make your best grade if you’re deserving of that commitment and we’re in hard times. That’s why I’m in the saddle with Wade and in the saddle with the staff and the team.”

It remains to be seen just how long Jones will stick with Phillips as his head coach if the Cowboys continue to falter, but for the time being, Phillips should be able to breathe a bit easier knowing that his job is relatively secure.

A win this Sunday over their in-state rivals in Houston isn’t a must, but starting the season 0-3 isn’t likely to give Dallas confidence in their ability to right the ship and make the playoffs.

Finishing the regular season without a playoff game or two would undoubtedly be the final nail in Phillips’ coffin, as anything short of a deep run through the postseason will be considered a failure by Jones.
