Matthews unconcerned by ankle injury

Chargers rookie running back Ryan Matthews took a positive outlook in discussing his chances of playing this week, saying he would be on the field if he felt good on Sunday, even as he revealed that his injury is a high ankle sprain, which could be significant enough to keep him from playing for up to six weeks if he aggravates it any further.

“They’re going to go on how I feel,” Mathews said. “I feel good … I don’t think it was that bad. They’re going to take precautionary measures to make sure my career isn’t going to be upset over an ankle … Something that could be a week, if I don’t treat it right could be six weeks.”

While losing playing time in his first season isn’t ideal, preventing this injury from turning into something much worse has to be paramount for the Chargers, given the price they paid to move up in the draft and acquire Matthews.

In any case, the alternative at this point isn’t all that bad, as fellow running back Mike Tolbert has played well thus far and presents a tough target for opposing defenses, with his size and strength, so the Chargers offense should be in good shape regardless of whether Matthews plays or not.
