Herm Edwards has never been one to shy away from controversy with his comments, and while his podium has been limited somewhat since his dismissal in Kansas City, he sent out a shock wave of sorts this afternoon with his interest in taking over the head coach position in Dallas if and when Wade Phillips is fired.
Speaking to WEPN-AM in New York City, Edwards stated emphatically that his team of choice, should he return to the head coaching ranks, is the Cowboys, who have underachieved this season and could be without a head coach by the season’s end.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expressed his confidence in Phillips earlier today, making Edwards’ interest irrelevant for the time being, but even if Phillips was fired, it’s likely that Jones would look elsewhere to fill the position, given Edwards’ less than stellar record as a head coach.
Edwards flopped during his most recent stint in that role, leading the Chiefs to a 15-33 record over three seasons, making it a relatively easy decision on the part of general manager Scott Pioli to relieve him of his duties.
Edwards’ career record as a head coach is 54-74, with a 2-3 record in the post-season.
