Throughout much of the off-season, New England quarterback Tom Brady has stayed silent on the negotiations that were taking place behind the scenes regarding his current contract and efforts to replace it with a new one, preferring to let his leadership on the field do the talking for him.
That decision is very close to paying off for him quite nicely, as sources close to the situation have indicated that Brady and the Patriots are very close to completing a four year extension that will likely pay him around $19 million a season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter has confirmed that a four year deal is the most likely outcome, but initially disputed that an agreement was imminent. He has since backed off that stance somewhat, allowing for the possibility that the folks over at the Boston Herald who first broke the story could end up being right on the money after all.
Brady has made it fairly clear that he will not accept an annual salary less than the $16.4 million a year that New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning currently makes, and looking at his stellar career thus far in New England, I don’t blame him one bit.
It’s still up in the air somewhat as to when this deal will become final, but there’s little doubt that both sides are motivated to make it happen sooner rather than later, and eventually any contractual language that’s holding up the process will be ironed out.
As always, we’ll keep you posted when that happens.
