Thurs 6:40 pm – According to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, the Eagles have tendered Weaver at the second round level, guaranteeing him at least $1.759 million this season should he stay in Philadelphia. If Weaver were to sign with another club, the Eagles have the right to match that offer or receive a 2nd round pick back as compensation.

3:20 pm - As the hours wind down until the start of the 2010 free agency period, one of the 10 free agent to-be players on the Philadelphia Eagles is working to keep himself from hitting the market. Leonard Weaver, the team’s fullback who earned a spot on the NFC’s Pro-Bowl roster, is “closer” to finalizing a long-term contract extension with the Birds, according to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

On a pair of previous occasions, Weaver was confirmed to be engaged in talks with the organization about a new deal; one came in January and another came the same day in which it was learned running back Brian Westbrook would be released.

Both times, it seemed quite clear that a new contract would be established, but as of now it appears the Eagles and Weaver will be working close to the deadline to get something done. Like all other restricted free agents, the FB is set to hit the market when the clock strikes midnight this evening and the signing period arrives. However, the general consensus is that he’d like to remain in midnight green, and the front office and fan base feel the same way.

After several seasons in Seattle, Weaver signed with the Eagles last offseason to a 1-year contract and has proven to be a valuable offensive contributor. In addition to being a solid blocker, the hybrid runner and receiver gained around 500 total yards and scored 4 touchdowns. He has been mentioned on a few free agent lists as being the top player at his position, in terms of those with potential to switch teams.
