Redskins finally jump into the fray

Known more in recent years for their prowess in free agency than winning games of importance, Washington took an odd approach to today’s free agent scramble, sitting back for the start and avoiding the rush to sign the biggest names on the market.

That said, there’s almost no way the Redskins would stay out of the mix for very long, and while they’ve still been awfully quiet on several key players, Washington is lining up for a shot at free agent offensive tackle Chad Clifton (Packers), who could be the best available in this weak class.

Clifton is apparently asking for close to $7 million a season, and while a team like the Redskins, who have a significant shortfall at the position, may be inclined to shell out that kind of cash, most other clubs (including Green Bay) will leave him alone. That gives Washington the inside track on getting Clifton into the fold, and his signing could be just what the doctor ordered, after losing Pro Bowl tackle Chris Samuels to retirement earlier today.
