12:35 pm – Schefter is reporting (via Twitter) that the coroner examining Adams’ body has determined the cause of death to be cardiac arrest.

12:05 pm - The Bears players, coaches, and fans awoke this morning to the terrible news that one of their own was gone.  According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, defensive end Gaines Adams died early this morning after being rushed to the emergency rooom in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Few details are available at this point, but the county coroner expects an autopsy to be undertaken sometime today. The information derived from that exam should bring Adams’ cause of death to light, which may not calm the tears, but will give some closure to his teammates, family, and friends.

Adams was acquired mid season by Chicago from Tampa Bay, with the Bears sending their second round pick to the Bucs in return. Adams was just 26 years old.
