Dolphins hoping stadium ideas are a hit

dolphinstadium1The city of Miami has a lot of things going for it, but a great football facility for the Dolphins to play in isn’t one of them.

While the sun and surf is absolutely wonderful, Land Shark Stadium leaves much to be desired from both the team and fan’s perspective, and unless Miami finds a way to renovate it soon, the NFL may shy away from bringing the biggest game in the land back to South Beach any time soon.

So understandably, the Dolphins have been working overtime to field proposals on a potential upgrade of the site, and although some ideas are typically outlandish and unrealistic, much of what the team is currently proposing makes sense.

But like several other teams around the league, Miami is finding the going to be rough in obtaining public financing for a major renovation, and could have problems in securing enough money to undertake the project.

According to Douglas Hanks of the Miami Herald, the Dolphins are open to discussion on the subject, putting forth a detailed series of proposals that should inspire a healthy debate leading up to the Super Bowl in February.

“This is Corporate America at its best. They’re going to be here wining and dining. The worst thing we can do as a community is to say — and I hear this often — ‘Don’t worry. It’s coming again.”’

– Chairman of South Florida’s Super Bowl Host committee Rodney Barreto

Hosting a Super Bowl brings in millions of dollars in revenue to a city and metropolitan area, from hotels to rental cars to nightclubs to restaurants. So it obviously stands to reason that the city of Miami would want to do anything possible to ensure itself as a host in the future, including a major stadium upgrade that would include a roof to protect fans of the game during the common rain deluges that can come along early in the year.

The best way to handle the situation is by bringing as many interested parties as possible to the table to hammer out a solution, and while the Dolphins still have a long way to go in the discussion, the foundation is being laid for football in Miami to carry on for many years to come.
