San Fran closes the door on Holmgren

It never was much more than a rumor, but a potential marriage between the 49ers and former Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren was shot down earlier today, when San Francisco team president Jed York stated emphatically that head coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan will be back next season.

Given his history with the 49ers, Holmgren was thought to have possibly been an attractive candidate to replace McCloughan in the off-season, but it seems as though the team’s upper management is comfortable with his performance as of now. Holmgren grew up in the Bay Area, and received his first NFL coaching job in 1986 with San Francisco.

Holmgren is still a likely candidate in Cleveland and Seattle at this point, with both teams looking to replace the general managers that started the season. At this point, it’s expected that any decision will be made once the season is complete.

San Francisco entered Monday night with a disappointing 5-7 record, trailing their division rivals in Arizona by three games.
