After missing the last four games due to a concussion he suffered against the Atlanta Falcons, the Redskins have finally sent RB Clinton Portis off to rest and rehab for the remainder of the year, placing the standout runner on injured reserve and ending his 2009 campaign.

Washington released a short statement announcing the move earlier today.

“We felt at this juncture in the season, it was best to place Clinton on injured reserve. After consulting with our medical staff and other specialists, Clinton’s prognosis is good and we expect him to make a full recovery and return to the Redskins.”

– Washington general manager Vinnie Cerrato

Portis’ 2010 salary cap figure is likely to be prohibitive enough to the Redskins that he will be the team’s running back next season, but it’s still within the realm of possibility that he could wind up being sent elsewhere for a modest draft pick or be put on waivers. If a team were to claim Portis, they would be responsible for his salary, making his loss a bit more palatable for Washington.
