Randy Moss is one of the most physically gifted players that the NFL has ever seen. A perfect combination of size, speed and hands, Moss is a quarterback’s dream. He can also be a coach’s nightmare.

There’s been no denying Moss’ talent since he came into the NFL in 1998, but his attitude has always been a question mark. Moss’ effort (or lack thereof) has always been a question. His attitude forced the Vikings and the Raiders to trade him, but he’s been close to a model player for the Patriots.

The trouble for Moss started this week when he showed up late for a meeting and in response, New England head coach Bill Belichick sent Moss home early as punishment. During Sunday’s game against Carolina, several Panthers defenders accused Moss of quitting and taking plays off.

“We knew [Moss] was going to shut it down. That’s what we wanted him to do. That’s what we did … He’d just give up a lot. Slow down, he’s not going deep, not trying to run a route. You can tell, his body language.”

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady defended Moss, during a radio interview this morning, basically saying Moss was one of the best teammates he’s ever played with. That said, it was hard not to notice the friction between Moss and Brady on the sideline yesterday, following a New England turnover.

The knock on Moss has always been that he’s the ultimate frontrunner. His production on the field is indisputable but when things aren’t going his way, he has shown a propensity to quit or take plays off. Given all of the other issues surrounding the team right now, the Patriots could be in for a world of hurt as the season comes to a close, if Belichick isn’t able to straighten Moss out as soon as possible.
