The Bears front office stayed busy today, finalizing a deal with QB Jay Cutler that will reportedly pay him close to $50 million ($20 million guaranteed) over the next four seasons, plus what’s left of this year, according to NFL.com’s Jason La Canfora. The contract replaces the one he had when he came over from Denver during the off-season.
Cutler’s leadership has certainly steadied the quarterback position in Chicago, although that hasn’t been reflected too much in the win/loss column, with the Bears sitting at 3-2 right now. Regardless, Cutler is definitely the franchise cornerstone and Chicago is paying him as such, hoping that will ease Cutler’s mind financially, and allow him to just play football instead of worrying about how much he’s getting paid.
Cutler is currently on pace to throw for more than 3,800 yards and 32 TDs this season, but the Bears would like to see the young gunslinger slow things down a bit, and eliminate the red zone mistakes that have plagued him throughout his short career. That said, they definitely like what they’ve seen so far, given their financial generosity, and should continue to push him towards making the calls offensively in the near future, allowing head coach Lovie Smith to continue his work with the defense.
