Quick Mock – Round 1
Posted by Chris KolbApr 22
I know it’s just three short days until we see how things play out for real in the draft, but I wanted to post a mock today to give you a sense of where I think things will be going as it stands right now.
Obviously, there will be trades that will take place throughout the entirety of the draft, especially in the first round, so there is little chance of things going down like this when it’s all said and done. That being said, many of the picks are ones that a team would make if things stayed true to form, so take the picks and analysis for what they’re worth.
1. Matt Stafford (QB) – Georgia
Even though the Lions already have a contract agreement in place with Aaron Curry, I still think they’ll end up getting it done with Stafford before the draft on Saturday, locking up what should be their franchise quarterback for the next six to seven years.
2. Jason Smith (OT) – Baylor
After signing Jason Brown to a big time deal to play center and releasing their long time stud at LT in Orlando Pace, finding a replacement to protect Marc Bulger’s blindside is now priority #1 for the Rams. Smith fits that bill and then some, and should keep St. Louis’ offense moving right along next season.
3. Aaron Curry (LB) – Wake Forest
This pick seemed like a lock a few weeks back, but the more and more I look at it, the less I think the Chiefs will actually stick around to make this pick here. If they do trade out, look for whoever selects in this spot to take Curry or Mark Sanchez.
4. Mark Sanchez (QB) – USC
Sanchez has literally flown up the charts as of late and there are several teams thought to be vying for his services right now. If he’s still on the board here, I can’t imagine the Seahawks taking a pass on him though, as Matt Hasselback won’t be around much longer and Sanchez has all the tools to be a legit starter for many years to come.
5. Brian Orakpo (DE) – Texas
The Browns could go several different ways with this pick, but I suspect that Eric Mangini is going to stay true to his roots and take a pass rushing LB here instead of the best player on the board in Michael Crabtree. That could change though if Cleveland decides to trade away Braylon Edwards this weekend.
