Goodell gets tough on head injuries

Players who continue to stay on the field after suffering a concussion or another head injury has become one of the most widely discussed topics around the league in recent months, and for good reason. Many studies have linked head injuries in professional sports with multiple disorders that manifest themselves at a later point in the athlete’s life.

With that in mind, NFL commisioner Roger Goodell and the league as a whole came out with a series of new guidelines governing the timeline for when players can return to action after having been diagnosed with a head injury earlier today. Here’s a basic rundown of the rules:

“Once removed for the duration of a practice or game, the player should not be considered for return-to-football activities until he is fully asymptomatic, both at rest and after exertion, has a normal neurological examination, normal neuropsychological testing, and has been cleared to return by both his team physician(s) and the independent neurological consultant. A critical element of managing concussions is candid reporting by players of their symptoms following an injury. Accordingly, players are to be encouraged to be candid with team medical staffs and fully disclose any signs or symptoms that may be associated with a concussion.”

Goodell stands by approach to head injuries

The NFL has long avoided claims showing a link between brain injuries and its physical play on the field, but that tactic may not work any longer.

According to the Associated Press, Commissioner Roger Goodell testified to a Congressional committee earlier today, trying hard to stay away from any admission that indicated as much, and defended the league’s approach in investigating the issue.

Goodell’s remarks were met with derision by several key members present at the hearing, with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) even going so far as to threaten the removal of the league’s anti-trust exemption:

“We’ve heard from the NFL time and time again — you’re always ’studying,’ you’re always ‘trying,’ you’re ‘hopeful.’ I want to know what are you doing … to deal with this problem and other problems related to injuries.” - Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA)

Stallworth suspension still in the air

Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain-Dealer is reporting that NFL commisioner Roger Goodell has not decided upon a specific suspension for Browns WR Donte Stallworth as of yet, and nothing is expected any time soon.

Stallworth met with Goodell earlier today to discuss his role in the death of Mario Reyes, who was struck by Stallworth’s vehicle early in the morning in Miami, Florida. Stallworth reportedly brought the surveillance video captured by Miami Power & Light at the intersection where the accident occurred, possibly in an attempt to prove that he had no ability to prevent the incident from occurring.

At this time, it’s highly unlikely that Stallworth will be allowed to play this season, given the league’s harsh outlook on matters of this sort as of late. Stallworth has already finished 24 days of jail time and will spend two years on house arrest, eight years on probation and lose his driver’s license for life.

Vick to Green Bay in the works?

Packers GM Ted Thompson added a fair amount of fuel to the fires of speculation surrounding former Falcons QB Michael Vick, after he refused to rule out the possibility of signing Vick to a contract earlier today.

Vick has been out of the league for two seasons while he served out his sentence for his role in a major dog fighting ring. He has been conditionally reinstated by NFL commisioner Roger Goodell, but it’s not known if the league will allow him to play in a regular season contest as of yet. Any team that signs Vick is allowed to have him in training camp and he can play in that team’s pre-season games as well.

Vick’s remorse will decide NFL future

NFL commisioner Roger Goodell hasn’t closed the door just yet on a possible return to glory for disgraced QB Michael Vick. But in a chat with members of the media yesterday, he made it abundantly clear that Vick will have to show extreme sorrow for his actions before he is allowed back onto the field.

“I’m not going to make a judgment until I know all the facts on Michael Vick. I think it’s clear he’s paid a price, but to a large extent he’s going to have to demonstrate to the larger community — not just to the NFL community and to me — that he has remorse for what he did and that he recognizes mistakes that he made.”

Vick is close to finishing his 23 month prison sentence resulting from his conviction on federal dog fighting charges. He is still facing a mountain of debt and creditors that are eager to recoup money they feel they are owed by the former Falcons star QB.

It is expected that Vick will have the ability to be reinstated by the league shortly before training camps start later this summer. It is not known if Goodell is planning on further punishment for him or how long of a suspension that might entail. (more…)
