Strength of Schedule – Week 16

With the regular season coming to a close next week, I wanted to take a look at how the strength of schedule for this season breaks down, especially with several teams vying for playoff positioning and several others in line for top five draft picks.

The percentages are calculated by adding up the total wins and losses for each team’s opponents through week 16 of this season. I will update this list next week following all of the week 17 contests, and then use it to finalize the main portion of the draft order for 2010. The order will be finalized prior to the Super Bowl in February.

March of the Eagles; playoffs await for McNabb and Co.

The Philadelphia Eagles clinched a playoff spot with their win last Sunday, but they know they still have work to do. Their running game is currently ranked 19th in the league, and while running backs LeSean McCoy and Leonard Weaver have done an admirable job over the past few weeks, having Brian Westbrook back would be huge for this offense.

Both Weaver and McCoy are averaging over four yards per carry, and have done a nice job picking up the slack since Westbrook suffered his first concussion against the Washington Redskins on October 26th. Another key injury is to rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, who has four touchdowns and is averaging over 13 yards a reception.

“My feeling when you have great players is that helps you a little bit more. We’re not going to get worse with Brian Westbrook coming back. He adds to that flexibility.”

– Philadelphia head coach Andy Reid

Playoff scenarios: Week 14

Here’s how the playoff seeding would look if the season ended this week…

AFC Wild Card - January 9th & 10th

#6 Jacksonville Jaguars (7-5) at #3 Cincinnati Bengals (9-3)

This could prove to be an interesting matchup in the wild card round, especially if the good Jaguars team we’ve seen at times this season shows up in Cincinnati. The Bengals, on the other hand, have to be disappointed that they’re playing this weekend, but a trip to the playoffs is always better than none.

#5 Denver Broncos (8-4) at #4 New England Patriots (7-5)

Quick Hits – Steelers run by the Chargers

All I can say is it’s about time.

A home team coming off a bye played finally played like they wanted to win, and instead of the Chargers surprising run back from the dead carrying on for another week, Pittsburgh will play host to their division rivals from Baltimore for the right to go to the Super Bowl.

The Steelers racked up 169 yards on the ground to go with two rushing touchdowns by RB Willie Parker, and took advantage of several mistakes by the Chargers to run away with the victory. San Diego put up a valiant effort in the waning moments of the game, but it was too little too late for QB Philip Rivers and the Chargers.

Rivers was once again spectacular at times, throwing for 308 yards and three touchdowns, the last of which came near the end of the game on a beautiful 62 yard toss to RB Darren Sproles, who was otherwise held in check.

While the Chargers are likely disappointed with this loss, they should be proud of what they accomplished this season, especially after they rebounded from a 4-8 start to finish the year 8-8 and earn a spot in the playoffs. That run likely saved San Diego head coach Norv Turner from the chopping block, although anything is possible with volatile Chargers GM A.J. Smith.

Quick Hits – One and done for the Giants

Earning a bye in the playoffs isn’t what it used to be.

The New York Giants kept the losing streak of the NFL’s top seeds alive, folding down the stretch of a physical game with their division rival from Philadelphia and losing 23-11 to the Eagles on a cold winter day in New Jersey.

The Giants offense played poorly when it mattered most, turning the ball over three times and missing two key field goals, which gave the Eagles solid field position throughout most of the game. Their defense played well enough to win, but the turnovers and offensive miscues proved to be too much for New York to overcome.

Philadelphia QB Donovan McNabb on the other hand, played a solid football game throughout, rushing for a touchdown and throwing another late in the game that sealed the win for the Eagles. RB Brian Westbrook was held in check by the Giants defense, but in the end, it mattered little, because Philadelphia made enough plays to put away the victory.

Much like the Titans, this has to be a tough loss to deal with for the Giants, as they carried high expectations with them into the playoffs and believed they had the ability to run the table once again to win back-to-back Super Bowls. For the Eagles, their magical ride continues for another week, and will now make a journey out west to take on the equally surprising Arizona Cardinals in an unlikely NFC Title game.
