Rams coaching rumors - Thursday

January 15th, 2009

6:00 pm: The Rams have moved on completely from Haslett, informing him that he will not be a candidate for the head coaching position in St. Louis.

Adam Schefter (NFL Network) speculated on NFL Total Access this evening that the frontrunner for the position is currently Leslie Frazier (Vikings), although Steve Spagnuolo (Giants) and Jason Garrett (Cowboys) are still definitely in the race.

2:45 pm: Apparently, Spagnuolo is demanding full control over his roster with the team that decides to hire him. The NY Daily News sees this as a major sticking point for the Jets and the Rams, explaining in part why Spagnuolo has dropped behind Ravens DC Rex Ryan.

8:30 am: According to John Clayton (ESPN and Adam Schefter (NFL.com), the Rams have narrowed their coaching candidate pool down to three finalists, and will likely announce their new head coach in the near future.

One of the frontrunners for the job is Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who spent a significant amount of time with the team on Tuesday, and reportedly interviewed extremely well.

The team’s two other finalists seem to be Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, although it’s possible that interim head coach Jim Haslett is still in the running for the position.

Garrett began his interview late yesterday afternoon and should conclude his time with the team this morning. Spagnuolo is scheduled to interview later today.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting that Rams interim head coach Jim Haslett is interviewing in Green Bay for the Packers opening at defensive coordinator. Haslett is still a possibility for the Rams, but at this point it seems that the team is ready to move on, so he’s making a smart move to see what else is available.
