Seiko - A new US Open title for Novak Djokovic

After a rough start to his season, Djokovic will go into the 2019 Australian Open in January looking to win his third straight major.

He sealed the win with a forehand volley before going to hug a visibly-dejected Del Potro at the net. He has 14 already.

The 13th-seeded team of Barty and Vandeweghe knocked of the No. 3 and No. 1 seeded teams en route to their first Grand Slam doubles title as a team.

"Hopefully him, Rafa, Roger are still fighting for grand slams, because it is so nice to watch them fighting for history". We just isolated ourselves and took things from a different perspective. "But couldn't make them because Novak was there nearly every time".

But in the last eight weeks the 31-year-old has resembled the Grand Slam machine that held all four major titles at the same time in 2016, wining three of his last four events including Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

Even taking into account all his wrist injury problems, he is certainly one of the players who would have been a multiple slam victor in another era.

Novak Djokovic kept getting the ball back, so del Potro would take a bigger whack, trying to find some spot in the corner of the court that would be uncovered.

"I thought of tennis, thought of the emotion that tennis provokes in me in a way".

"(Marco) Cecchinato has made me realise a lot of things after that loss to him in Roland Garros", said Djokovic.

With his third championship at Flushing Meadows, Djokovic matched Pete Sampras for third on the career list for Grand Slam titles.

"But I believe in the mindset that you can only embrace this present moment and I don't want to compare myself with the player and the person I was two or three years ago because my life turned upside down".

It was only the second set dropped by the Argentine at the tournament.

Nadal stayed at No. 1 despite retiring from his semifinal last week, and Federer remained No. 2 after a fourth-round loss in NY.

This is Djokovic's second straight Grand Slam singles title this season following Wimbledon 2018 and a 14th overall to tie American Pete Sampras for third all-time.

"I was hoping he [Pete Sampras] would be here tonight but he's not". But it took me actually three, four months. "Today I really am".

"I will try to keeping (troubling) these guys, playing in the next tournaments, and we'll see".

"He could be [back to his dominant best] and I know I've been saying it too much but as long as Marian Vajda is around he will be able to dominate again". "I feel good with my two-handed backhands, as well. I think more than passion, it's just the will to work and to be dedicated every day". "So I'm glad for him".

"Difficult times but you learn from adversity".

Djokovic then got right back to work, and announced that he was, once more, himself by winning Wimbledon.

"I breathed in the new inspiration, new motivation".
