Florence sits on doorstep of Carolinas with projected winds of 100mph

The vivid presentation - powered by the Unreal Engine, most commonly used in video games - seems likely to serve as a more pressing demonstration of the storm's threat than a mere written warning, and that's vitally important for folks in impacted areas.

Flood warnings on the Neuse at Kinston projected water levels climbing to a moderate flood level by Saturday and creeping close to major flooding through at least Wednesday.

The full impact of storm surge on the coast will depend on whether the storm's arrival coincides with high tide. Its forward movement slowed to 12 miles per hour (19 kph) and top sustained winds stayed at 110 miles per hour (175 kph).

"We had pretty high floodwaters up until the early morning hours", Risty-Davis tells NPR's Morning Edition.

The Miami-based center says the center of Florence will approach the coasts of North and SC later today.

A buoy off the North Carolina coast recorded waves almost nine metres high as Florence churned toward shore.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Edisto Beach South Carolina to South Santee River South Carolina. These are numbers that far exceed what fell on the same region during Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

North Carolina is now facing the brunt of the storm, though that's likely to change since weather forecasts predict Florence will head inland before moving north, towards Virginia and Maryland. Between both Carolinas, there is a total of 6,400 guardsmen on duty ahead of the storm.

But the background then changed to a street corner, where the virtual water level began rising around Navarro. As the water drains off mountains and hills through the weekend, rivers will swell beyond their banks and flood surrounding communities and farms.

The National Hurricane Center says the outer rain bands of Hurricane Florence are approaching the coast of North Carolina.

The bulk of the three media briefings held by police chief Dan House surrounded how they were still anticipating the serious and catastrophic storm surge as well as hurricane force winds.

Over 1,400 flights have been cancelled, according to FlightAware.com, as most of the coastal region's airports are closed to ride out the storm. The still-soggy storm could drop several inches of rain on northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee as it turns north. Forecasters said catastrophic freshwater flooding is expected well inland over the next few days as Florence crawls across the Carolinas.

Forecasters' European climate model is predicting 2 trillion to 11 trillion gallons of rain will fall on North Carolina over the next week, according to meteorologist Ryan Maue of weathermodels.com.

"Its slow movement will allow rain to continue to pile up in areas from Jacksonville to Wilmington seeing as much as 10" to 20" of rainfall. In these areas, the ground has already been saturated by weeks of higher-than-normal rainfall.

The National Hurricane Center said Florence will eventually make a right hook to the northeast over the southern Appalachians, moving into the mid-Atlantic states and New England as a tropical depression by the middle of next week.
