Vladimir Putin says Russia identified suspects in Novichok poisoning

The Russian president said they are "civilians" with no links to the government.

The elder Skripal, who was a Russian intelligence agent that switched sides, as well as his daughter, survived the poisoning and now live in an undisclosed location.

Police and prosecutors last week said Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov had been identified as members of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service.

Russian state TV channel Rossiya-24 said the suspect named as Alexander Petrov would maybe speak next week.

Skripal's niece Viktoria, who lives in Russia and often voices pro-Kremlin arguments on Russian television talk shows, told the Interfax news agency later on Wednesday that she knows "through her own sources" that the men identified as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov are "ordinary men" who are "shocked" by the accusations.

The two men accused by the United Kingdom of carrying out a nerve agent attack have been identified and are civilians, not criminals, the Russian president Vladimir Putin has said.

"We know who they are, we have found them", Putin told an economic forum in the presence of Japan's Shinzo Abe and China's Xi Jinping in the far eastern city of Vladivostok.

"We hope they will turn up very soon and will tell everything themselves".

He added: 'There is nothing special and nothing criminal about it, I'm telling you'. "We'll see in the near future", he added.

Police officer Nick Bailey, who visited the home of the Skripals shortly after the attack, was also left critically ill from exposure to the substance.

If they do so, it would not be the first time accused Russian assassins have answered worldwide allegations through the Russian media.

Moscow has vehemently denied it is responsible for the poisoning.

In a statement that deepened the diplomatic crisis between the two countries, the Prime Minister said: 'The GRU is a highly disciplined organisation with a well-established chain of command.

The Skripals spent weeks in hospital in a critical condition after the poisoning.

The UK's Crown Prosecution Service said it is not applying to Russian Federation for the two men's extradition, because Russian Federation does not extradite its own nationals, according to the BBC.

In July, Mr Rowley came across the poison, which had been concealed inside a perfume bottle and left in a charity bin.
