USA threatens sanctions on ICC, prosecution of officials

Mr. Bolton also announced that the United States would shut down the Palestine Liberation Organization's office in Washington - a decision linked to the International Criminal Court, which he said was being prodded by the Palestinians to investigate Israel.

Speaking at a Federalist Society event in Washington DC, National Security Advisor John Bolton outlined a series of retaliations the USA would take if the investigation is opened. "The Palestinians' resort to the ICC and refusal to negotiate with Israel and the United States is not the way to advance peace, and it is good that the United States is taking a clear stand on this matter", said an Israeli official who requested anonymity.

The Trump Administration ordered the close of the Palestine Liberation Organization office in Washington D.C.

"Accordingly, we continue to call upon the International Criminal Court to open its immediate investigation into Israeli crimes".

In a further show of support, the court's overseeing body said it received "strong cooperation and backing" from its 123 member states as well as from other states, global organisations and civil society. "If we don't make a deal, we're not paying.' And that's going to have a little impact", Trump said on a conference call with Jewish leaders Thursday.

"We will not cooperate with the ICC".

"We will not cooperate with the ICC", Bolton said in his first major speech since joining the Trump administration in April.

He added that the United States would "not allow the ICC, or any other organisation, to constrain Israel's right to self-defence" or to "defend citizens from terrorist attacks".

"We are talking about thousands of people who are regularly in need of these consular services, be it things related to marriage and divorce, doing any kind of business, adding a phone line to a business they already have existing in the Palestinian territories or any of that stuff", Omar Baddar, the deputy director of the pro-Palestinian Arab American Institute, told Al-Monitor. The Palestinian Authority previously asked the ICC to investigate Israel's West Bank settlements in May.

He said the ICC lacked checks and balances, claimed "jurisdiction over crimes that have disputed and ambiguous definitions" and failed to "deter and punish atrocity crimes".

And on that note, it was nearly as though this move was predicted by The Daily Wire editor in chief Ben Shapiro.

President Donald Trump has successfully employed the "Dirty Harry" approach when dealing with rogue regimes most notably North Korea and Syria.

After becoming president in January 2009, President Barack Obama, a Democrat, vowed to end the Afghan war - one of the longest conflicts in U.S. history - but he failed to keep his promise.

"Trump has become an enemy of the Palestinian people and an enemy of peace", said the Palestinians. The moves are likely to harden Palestinian resistance to the US role as a peace broker.

He seemed to get the message that time.

China, for example, lowered its tariffs on American automobiles; Germany said its open to doing the same.

The Palestinian Authority has denied Trump the role of Middle Ease peace mediator that Washington enjoyed for decades.

Last month, the U.S. cancelled more than $200m (£153m) in aid for projects in the West Bank and Gaza.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat delivered a statement protested the action.

Lucy Bar-On, a 60-year-old Israeli nurse, said the failure to move forward along the peace path charted by the interim agreements only emboldened hardliners: "They won, the extremists on the Israeli side and those on the Palestinian side".
