Ramos backed by ITF over 'regrettable' Serena rant

Williams was facing Japanese worldwide Naomi Osaka in the final of the US Open on Saturday, as the American was chasing a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam title.

The fallout has been ugly since the final, with talk of some umpires refusing to officiate Williams' matches.

"Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard".

Chair umpires took centre stage at Flushing Meadows this year, more than at any other tournament in recent memory, and culminated with Serena Williams being reduced to tears at her treatment in the women's final.

Count US Open men's champion Novak Djokovic among those who believe chair umpire Carlos Ramos went too far in issuing three rules violations against Serena Williams in the women's final.

Williams told the supervisor on court that she had received the penalty "because I'm a woman", suggesting a male player would not have been penalized for saying the same thing.

"It's an unhappy situation but "à la carte" refereeing doesn't exist".

Belarusian player Victoria Azarenka, commenting on the coaching issue, said it bothers her to have inconsistent rules.

London based newspaper, The Times reports that umpires have vowed to band together against Serena Williams for taking Carlos Ramos to task during the US Open finals after he accused the tennis phenom of cheating.

The umpires feel that Ramos was "thrown to the wolves for simply doing his job and was not willing to be abused for it".

It's one thing for a player to behave boorishly towards an umpire who was within his rights to flag her as he did, but for the sport's governing bodies to pile on?

"The umpiring fraternity is thoroughly disturbed at being abandoned by the WTA", Richard Ings, a retired, elite Gold Badge umpire told ESPN.com on Tuesday. "Do not worry about me!"

The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and United States Tennis Association (USTA) backed Williams' claims after her straight sets defeat to Haitian-Japanese Naomi Osaka. When asked what she'll buy with her $3.8 million in prize money from the US Open, she selflessly says she'll get something for her parents.

Keothavong said: "Yes, that is a valid point and I think sexism in tennis and across sport is also a valid point".

He said: "It's a delicate situation". "I think it's a matter of having a conversation with the two guys and saying let's cut it out, let's slow it down, and then perhaps not understanding how they can have the same conversation with the females". Later in the same set, Ramos cited her for breaking her racket in frustration, and when she called him a "thief" for the resulting penalty that cost her a point, he issued a third violation that cost her a game. Japan got its first Grand Slam champion in the form of Naomi Osaka, who played incredibly powerful and well-strategised tennis against Serena Williams.
