Officer shoots, kills man after going into wrong apartment

The 26-year-old man who was killed by an off-duty Dallas police officer in an apartment she apparently confused for her own was a beloved member of a local church as well as an employee at a prestigious accounting and consulting firm, according to those who knew him.

The mother of a black man who was shot and killed inside his home by a white Dallas police officer who said she mistook the apartment for her own has suggested that her son might still be alive if he were white. These photographs are from Jean's Facebook page. He later found out it hadn't, Merritt said, so he did not name Guyger again at the press conference.

The officer was not injured and will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. "Based on that, they asked us to hold off on the warrant until they had an opportunity to investigate some of the information that was provided from that interview".

The officer called dispatch to report that she had shot the man Thursday night, police said. Few other details have been released, although police said they took a blood sample from her for testing. A struggle began and Guyger fired her Taser at Perez, who then wrested away her Taser.

Guyger called 911 and officers responded in four minutes, according to Hall.

Renee Hall said on Friday would be charged with manslaughter, has not yet been arrested because Hall is no longer leading the investigation.

A small group staged a peaceful protest Friday afternoon at DPD headquarters demanding that the officer who shot Jean.

"She is a very religious woman and her view on this was amazingly graceful in a peaceful way, but she's hurting so deeply", he said.

The apartment doors at the complex are all similar, Kinsey said, but Jean's doorstep had a bright red mat. Guyger then shot Perez.

"He was great, as a neighbor - quiet, friendly, super chill", Kinsey said. "Not only has he lost his life, but we've lost a potential leader for this city for decades to come". "He had a huge smile".

The Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Texas Rangers, didn't immediately reply to a Saturday phone message seeking comment about the investigation. The state investigators, she said, said they needed more time to investigate. However, as we continued this investigation it became clear that we were dealing with what appears to be.a very unique situation.

According to police, Ms Guyger shot and killed Jean after returning in-uniform to the South Side Flats, where they both had apartments, following her shift.

Guyger is now on administrative leave while the department investigates the shooting. The company said he was an associate in its risk assurance department.

Botham Jean attended Harding University in Arkansas.

"This is a bad tragedy".

Morrison prayed that God would use Botham Jean's death "to bring us together and not to divide us".

Jean described himself on LinkedIn as a "young professional, engaged in developing a career built upon integrity, dedication and relationships, leveraging useful technologies to gain an understanding of and add value in a range (of) industries, striving towards leadership in my career, my community and society".

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawling said Saturday that Botham Jean's family had flown to Dallas. Plans for the funeral were announced at a prayer vigil Saturday.

In St Lucia, government leaders said the death of Botham Jean came as a "shock" and that embassy officials in the U.S. would provide assistance to the victim's family.
