Pakistan army chief Bajwa bats for ‘self-determination’ in J&K

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday chose to extend federal cabinet by inductucting four more ministers.

In an unusual move, Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has batted for democracy and the need for strengthening of institutions in the coup-prone country, as he shared the dias with Prime Minister Imran Khan.

"We have learned a lot from the wars of 65 and 71".

"I urge overseas Pakistanis to contribute to this fund".

The presence of the Indian Army in civilian areas of Kashmir led to human rights violations, said the Pakistan prime minister.

Pakistan was the ally of the USA during the Cold War as it fought the American war with the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. The role of the security forces and intelligence agencies in making the country safer against all threats was unparalleled, he said. India also contests Pakistan's claim that the part of Kashmir administered by India is witnessing a "freedom movement". "The resolution of (the) Kashmir issue according to the United Nations resolutions is indispensable", Khan was quoted as saying.

Rejecting the impressions of a divide between the civil administration and military, the Prime Minister said both were on same page regarding the issues faced by the country.

Outgoing President Mamnoon Hussain said that people of Pakistan demonstrated unsurpassed national unity and stood by their armed forces to thwart the evil designs of the enemy.

Earlier, after the Pakistan army chief stoked the controversy, Punjab cabinet minister and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, who had recently visited Pakistan and hugged Qamar Bajwa, refused to comment on the matter.

Bajwa made the statement on Thursday while speaking at the Defence and Martyrs Day to commemorate the 1965 and 1971 wars with India, reported Geo News.

Khan said his government would continue its absolute struggle in the war against terrorism till its logical end.

He said that Pakistan Army is the only intact and functional institution of the country. But from 2014, the days is being observed as Defence and Martyrs Day to pay tribute to all those killed in action.
