A bill from Bernie Sanders wants to "Stop BEZOS"

A bill from Bernie Sanders wants to

While incentivizing companies to pay their employees higher wages, the measure would shift the burden from taxpayers back to the companies, he said. Dorsey also went before the House Energy and Commerce committee as well.

Amazon declined to comment about the legislation, but in a blog post the company argued it provides "competitive pay, health insurance, disability insurance, retirement savings plans, company stock, and flexible schedules for new parents, along with opportunities to learn skills and further develop their career", countering Sanders's accounts of employee experiences.

During a speech over the weekend, Sanders called out Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos for the company's pay practices, despite the businessman's vast fortune.

Sanders spoke directly to wealth discrepancy between Bezos and the low-wage workers at Amazon.

Bernie says, "Bezos is paying his employees so low that these workers are depending on food stamps, subsidized housing and Medicaid to survive". Essentially companies would have to reimburse the federal government for the cost of federal assistance programs like food stamps, Medicaid and subsidized housing.

"It's time to get Jeff Bezos, the Waltons, and other billionaires who won't pay a living wage off of welfare", Sanders tweeted on Wednesday.

"Specifically, this bill would establish a 100 percent tax on corporations with 500 or more employees, equal to the amount of federal benefits received by their low-wage workers", Sanders said.

The bill comes a week after Amazon responded to Sanders' constant barrage of income inequality attacks on the online retailer.

"The American people are exhausted of having to subsidize the wealthiest people in this country who are paying wages that are just so low that people can't get by", Sanders said at a press conference introducing the bill. Another is that employers would discriminate against hiring those who they think might trigger the tax.

"Workers who receive these benefits would thus become thousands of dollars more expensive to employ than other workers who are paid the same wage but don't qualify for these benefits", Greenstein said.

Amazon shares are down 1.3% to $2,012.68.

Sanders has cited research from the Institute of Local Self-Reliance in favor of the bill, which highlighted Amazon workers enrolling in the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Denise Bennett, a former Amazon worker in Tennessee, said she made $11 an hour as a full-time employee but had to rely on SNAP benefits to make ends meet.

"They could face "statistical discrimination" at work and if therefore it's harder for them to find a job, they risk not meeting a work requirement and losing the benefit that they very much need", he said.
