Fan frenzy as Tiger and Rory share PGA Tour lead

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. - Tiger Woods failed to take advantage of the great start he got off to in the first round of the BMW Championship, failing to break par on Friday - the only player in the top 11 to not shoot in the 60s.

A day after opening with a course-record equalling 62 at Aronimink Golf Club and sharing the lead, Woods stalled during an even-par 70 that left him at eight-under-par and five shots off the pace. A day after making seven birdies and an eagle, he could manage just three birdies and added bogeys at the last two holes, including a three-putt on the 18th green. McIlroy, who shared the overnight lead with Woods for the first time in their illustrious careers, followed up his first-day 62 with a 69 and is at 9-under.

"I made a few putts today and also from right out of the gate with birdies at 10 and 12 and 13 so that was a nice way to get things rolling", said Woods, who started on the back nine.

Woods and McIlroy still had to hit the shots and make the putts.

But McIlroy threatened to trump his rival with a round that included a career-best six birdies in a row - before bogeying his 16th and 17th holes.

"It's been something I've been struggling with all year and it's been much better the last couple of weeks", he said. "It helped a lot".

He was near the lead when he finished his round, but numerous other 69 players in the field-only the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings qualified for this event-were shooting similarly impressive scores on an immaculate day for scoring.

Like Woods, McIlroy mixed a birdie and a bogey on the front side and bobbled again at 11, going to 1-over for the day and dropping back to 7-under for the tournament.

"What was worst was just not giving myself a better chance to shoot the 59", he said. "It turned into even par which is not what I needed to do today".
