Elon Musk Tokes and Tesla Stock Tumbles

Elon Musk appeared on comedian Joe Rogan's podcast on Thursday.

Toward the end of the more than two-hour interview that was live-streamed on YouTube, Mr. Rogan pulled out a joint that he described as marijuana wrapped inside tobacco. "He jested "'You probably can't do this because of stockholders, right?". Rogan asked Musk, as he offered him the joint.

Musk responded with, "I mean it's legal, right?"

Of 50 United States sates, recreational cannabis remains illegal in 41 - but it was legalised in California, where the podcast was filmed, in January.

Now, with the company set on staying public, its finances are under extreme scrutiny from investors and analysts as it fights to become profitable.

The interview was punctuated by long pauses and flashing eye movement by Musk after he was asked questions. "It just wasn't the way I operate", he said. "Especially auto companies", Musk said.

The spot on one of the most popular podcasts in the US marks Musk's first appearance in a public forum since he stunned the financial world last month with his short-lived effort to take Tesla private. Musk has said he stands by his initial tweet about the company going private. He and Musk discussed pot being legal in California.

Why did a rich man who wants to transport mankind to Mars and fix Los Angeles' traffic issues with an underground tunnel even go on Joe Rogan's podcast?

Tesla's $1.8 billion junk bond maturing in August 2025 plunged as much as 4 cents on the dollar to below 82 cents, a record low, in Friday trading, pushing the yield above 8.8 percent.

"A lot of people don't like humanity and think it is a blight, but I don't", he said. "Every now and again I get drawn in and it's not good, you can make some mistakes".

The company, hurt in the past month by Musk's high-profile U-turn on a deal to take it private, said Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton resigned, citing discomfort with the level of public attention and pace.

He said: "I think the future in where we are a space-faring civilisation out there among the stars, that is very exciting". It said Morton had no disagreements with Tesla's leadership or financial reporting.
