Passengers quarantined after dozens fall ill on board plane

Three passengers and seven crew members were assessed as needing care in hospital.

Flight 203, a double-deck Airbus A388 carrying about 500 passengers, landed shortly after 9 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT), according to an airlines spokeswoman, reports the news agency.

ABC News said the pilot had reported that two male passengers had very high fevers and that dozens were "coughing nonstop".

The double-decker Emirates flight, which rapper Vanilla Ice was on, originated in Dubai. Nine others refused medical attention, according to Eric Phillips, the press secretary for New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. "That did not happen this time".

Larry Coben said they were told on board that people were sick but added that he hadn't seen any sick people himself.

- Emergency personnel responded to reports of sick passengers aboard an Emirates flight arriving at JFK Airport on Wednesday morning.

Health officials met the plane on the ground at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where medics and federal customs agents took temperatures of passengers and evaluated symptoms.

A NY police counterterrorism division tweeted it appeared to be a "medical situation". At least 10 passengers reported feeling sick and were taken to a local hospital, the airline confirmed in a statement on Twitter.

All those on board were screened by health officials on arrival.

NY media outlets had initially put the number of ill passengers at about 100.

Shortly after noon, all the passengers had disembarked the plane.

Passengers were exiting the plane with their luggage and getting on to buses. Because the plane also stopped in Mecca, Phillips tweeted that the flu may be the culprit, as Mecca is now experiencing an outbreak.
