Tropical Storm Gordon moves over land near AL-MS border

According to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, the child was killed when a tree fell on top of a mobile home in the 4000 block of West Bobe Street. The rainfall forecast is 2-4 inches with higher amounts still possible in southwestern parts of our area.

Tropical Storm Gordon has made landfall near the Alabama/Mississippi border and is weakening as it moves North.

A couple of tornadoes are possible near the Alabama and Florida coasts, the NHC said.

"All the outside furniture has to come in, but honestly it's not even a freak-out kind of hurricane, so we're not super-stressed right now", Ashley Peeples said around midday on Tuesday.

The storm's turbulent center is expected to plow a path from the southwest corner of Alabama and central MS into part of Louisiana and southern Arkansas.

Mayors of barrier islands in the storm's path had warned that their communities might get cut off from the mainland.

After becoming a tropical storm on Labor Day, Gordon is now moving over land near the Alabama-Mississippi border, bringing strong winds and heavy rains to the area.

A wave near the Cape Verde Islands off Africa is also expected to become a depression or tropical storm in the next two to five days, with another wave behind it.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

Authorities have yet to release the name or age of the child. Those outages are mostly in coastal Alabama and include the western tip of the Florida panhandle around Pensacola, with a few hundred in southeastern Mississippi. Crews were already restoring electricity early Wednesday.

"The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the east of the landfall location, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves", the center said. He was still without electricity as he left for his 12-hour shift.

Nevertheless, she said she and her husband will remain in their home, which sits on tall pilings, 24 feet above the ground.

The storm was due to come ashore late Tuesday near the border between Louisiana and MS, and drop as much as 8 inches of rain in areas still recovering from last year's hurricanes.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey declared emergencies.

Oil and gas companies in the Gulf of Mexico also evacuated more than 50 platforms as the storm swept in, temporarily halting production. As of now, there is nothing to worry about in regards to Florence for Alabama, but the East coast will have to watch it as we head into the weekend and early next week.
